Inkaterra’s Organic Tea: From Machu Picchu to the World

The organic tea cultivated at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel continues to delight palates. At the 7th edition of Teas of the World Awards 2024, organized by the renowned AVPA (Agency for the Valorization of Agricultural Products), Inkaterra won two silver medals in the ‘Steamed Green Tea’ and ‘Black Tea with Buds’ categories, adding to the gold medal earned in 2023 in the ‘Thé noir en perles’ category. These awards underscore Inkaterra’s commitment to sustainability, tradition, and excellence.

How did this story begin?
In 1976, Inkaterra founder and chairman José Koechlin acquired a 25-acre plot of land in the heart of the Andean cloud forest in order to establish Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. On this land, there was a century-old Camellia sinensis tea plantation, which has since been carefully preserved under natural shade to maintain soil fertility. Using ancient techniques, Inkaterra has successfully produced teas that reflect the unique terroir of Machu Picchu, now globally recognized for their exceptional quality.

In addition to the award-winning tea, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel stands out as one of the world’s most diverse urban hotspots. It is home to 298 bird species, according to eBird, and 372 species of native orchids, recognized by the American Orchid Society as the world’s largest collection in its natural habitat.

“We are honored by this remarkable recognition,” said José Koechlin. “These medals are a source of pride for Peru, celebrating our rich cultural and natural heritage. Our organic tea, available exclusively at Inkaterra hotels, revives an ancient tradition of cultivation, contributes to the conservation of the Andean cloud forest in Machu Picchu, and is part of the many enjoyable experiences we offer our travelers.”
