Perú
Host Country for the 7th AOC
Peru is one of the four most biodiversity-rich countries in the world. Regarding orchids, 212 genera and 2206 species have been registered (MINAM 2015). However, the actual number may be around 2500-3500 species, due to the vast range of microclimates.
Peruvian orchids belong to one of the most studied groups of plants, due to the growing curiosity towards research projects and scientific explorations performed throughout the last two decades, which confirm the richness and splendor of species native to the valleys of Peru, in the high Andes and the Amazon basin. Thus, in the 6th Scientific Conference in Medellin (Colombia), the upcoming edition was confirmed in Peru for the first time ever, in merit of the successful results achieved in orchid research and conservation.
Cusco
Across the imposing Southern Andes of Peru, in the region of Cusco, an environment effervescent with life can be found – the cloud forests at 1000-3500masl, with the greatest orchid diversity. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel illustrates this natural phenomenon, as its grounds conserve the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species) according to the American Orchid Society.
