Dr. Francisco Dallmeier is one of the world’s leading authorities on biological diversity. He is committed to the integration of scientific studies on species and natural resources with conservation and management programs that encourage sustainability.
The longtime relationship between the Smithsonian Institution and Inkaterra (last year, Inkaterra Asociación biologist Carmen Soto visited the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. for a month-long exchange on Andean bear conservation and native orchids) was strengthened last month, with Dr. Dallmeier’s visit to the Inkaterra Andean Bear Conservation Center, to “help develop a strategy for conservation, education and management of the captive and wild populations of Andean bears in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary.”
In the following interview, Dr. Dallmeier discusses his lifelong devotion to biodiversity (he was appointed Director of La Salle Museum of Natural History at age 20), his contribution to the Inkaterra Andean Bear Conservation Center, and the greatest satisfactions and challenges of leading conservation initiatives.
