FAUNA SIGHTINGS IN THE RAINFOREST
Late 2016 has been a most exciting time for Inkaterra Explorer Guides, as many remarkable sightings occurred in hotel grounds and areas of influence in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios. First of all, during an expedition at Gamitana Creek, travelers found a 4-meter anaconda (Eunectes murinus) while it was devouring an agouti. A few days later, in a birding excursion at the Cachuela clay lick, a Harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja), one of the largest and most powerful raptor in the Americas, was seen perched on a tree. While a Brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus), one of the four living species of three-toed sloths that inhabit the trees of South America, was seen during an excursion to Lake Sandoval. INKATERRA HACIENDA URUBAMBA ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER
The recent addition to the Inkaterra hotel portfolio appeared in the December 2016/January 2017 edition of National Geographic Traveler, in an article on the many wonders found in Peru’s Sacred Valley of the Incas. “Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, a National Geographic Unique Lodge, celebrates this often overlooked region,” says Senior Editor Sarah Erdman. “Lodge owners José Koechlin and Denise Guislain-Koechlin combined Inca-inspired masonry with Spanish colonial architecture, commissioned locals to weave textiles, and worked with area farmers to plant a 10-acre organic garden filled with native species such as golden berries and tree tomatoes. Guests go biking in the valley; learn to make chicha, or corn beer, on site; or follow a naturalist on a lantern-lit hike. And on the return to the lodge, Alfredo Quispetupa concocts a glorious pisco sour at the hacienda bar as the sun sets on the Andes.”
