Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog invites new aspirants from all over the world to apply to the open call for “Filming in Peru with Werner Herzog”, produced by Black Factory Cinema in partnership with Inkaterra. The practical workshop will take place between May 1-11 at Inkaterra Guides Field Station, in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios.
After a successful experience in Cuba where he accompanied the creation of 55 young filmmakers, Herzog himself is getting ready for this new experience. “Don’t expect wild jungle, and wild adventure: piranha and snakes. We will make films, and I will be with you,” he states. Besides fieldwork for the shootings, for which students will have at their disposal a complete production dossier with casting and locations, there will be dialogue sessions with the filmmaker to discuss creation and personal inquiries regarding the art of film.
The short films produced in previous editions of the workshop have been exhibited at international festivals such as Locarno, Rotterdam, IDFA, DocsLisboa, among many others. Call for entries is opened until February 7th 2018.

NEW FEATURETTE ON
VIRGILIO MARTINEZ’S GASTRONOMY WORKSHOP
AT INKATERRA
Renowned chef Virgilio Martinez from Central Restaurant appears in a new documentary on his gastronomy workshop, celebrated last October at the Inkaterra lodges in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios. The event explored ecosystems and the sustainable use of natural resources in this megadiversity hotspot.
“The Amazon means a lot to me,” says Martinez. “It represents Peru alive in nature. It means this unprotected and unknown area. The Amazon, for me, is also an understanding of what our relationship with nature could be via plants, via animals. The more you learn, explore, and gain experiences, the more knowledge you gain, and not only at a scientific or experimental level. I think there is also a certain spiritual level of wisdom, which is what we are looking for.”

INKATERRA CELEBRATES
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’S YEAR OF THE BIRD
National Geographic celebrates 2018 as the “Year of the Bird” to encourage people everywhere to commit themselves to conservation, as environmental changes driving the dramatic loss of bird diversity across the Earth. “If you take care of the birds, you can take care of most of the environmental problems in the world,” says Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, biologist and “godfather of biodiversity.”
With 903 bird species registered in its areas of influence (equivalent to Costa Rica’s total bird diversity), Inkaterra celebrates the Year of the Bird showcasing a different species each month. January’s bird is the Black-faced cotinga (Conioptilon mcilhennyi), very appealing to birders due to its restricted territorial range between Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. If you spot this species at Inkaterra, snap and share your photos with us with the hashtags #BirdofMouth and #BirdYourWorld.

INKATERRA ASOCIACIÓN
DESIGNS DIVING ROUTE
The economic program Innovate Peru (Ministry of Production) and NGO Inkaterra Asociación are developing a touristic underwater route in Cabo Blanco, for scuba and snorkel diving. The initiative aims to find appealing zones for ecotourism, from marine landscapes to coral reefs. In association with Ricardo Bouroncle (BOZ), a new diving suit with sensors to measure water pressure, depth and body temperature is being designed for user safety. Marine conservation initiatives include biodiversity inventories overseen by researcher Yuri Hooker. Species identification (fish and invertebrates) will allow Inkaterra Asociación to define Cabo Blanco’s ocean diversity as a basis for sustainable development.
