INKATERRA LA CASONA AND INKATERRA HACIENDA URUBAMBA
AMONG TOP 100 HOTELS IN THE WORLD

Inkaterra La Casona has been named the Best City Hotel in Central and South America in Travel + Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Awards. The property also achieved 4th place in the Top 100 Hotels in the World, scoring 97.87 – a tie shared with Iverlonchy Castle in Torlundy, Scotland.

The first boutique hotel in Cusco and first Relais & Châteaux property in Peru, Inkaterra La Casona had Spanish Conquistador Diego de Almagro and ‘Libertador’ Simón Bolívar among its illustrious guests. The 16th century manor house was harmoniously restored by Denise Koechlin throughout five years, reflecting the encounter of cultures and traditions across centuries. Surrounding the main patio, its eleven suites are provided with chimneys, heated floors and extra-large bathtubs. Its halls are decorated with colonial furniture, Pre-Columbian textiles and original murals.

Additionally, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba (Sacred Valley of the Incas) was rated #2 in the Best Resort Hotels in South America list, and #14 in the Top 100 Hotels in the World.

“We are truly honored to have two of our properties acknowledged among the finest hotels in the world, and Inkaterra La Casona considered the best hotel in the region by the most discerning travelers,” said Inkaterra founder José Koechlin.

Every year, the readers of Travel + Leisure, the largest and most influential travel magazine brand in the United States, rate their recent experiences with destinations, hotels and resorts, spas, tour operators and safari outfitters, airlines, airports, cruise lines and rental-car companies in our World’s Best Awards survey. The results of the 23rd World’s Best Awards will be published in the August 2018 issue of Travel + Leisure and online at TravelandLeisure.com. Winners will be honored on July 24 during a special cocktail celebration in New York City.

CABO BLANCO CELEBRATES REGATTA OF THE CENTURY

NGO Inkaterra Asociación sponsored the 2018 Regatta of the Century, a tradition that took place in Cabo Blanco on June 29 during the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Escorted by Ernest Hemingway’s legendary fishing boat Miss Texas, over thirty artisanal watercrafts from El Ñuro, Órganos and Talara sailed Peru’s tropical northern coast. Inkaterra has proposed to the Ministry of Culture the declaration of Cabo Blanco’s artisanal fishing as Living Cultural Landscape – first step to be named Intangible Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO.

This unique spectacle aims to raise awareness on the conservation of one of the most diverse seas worldwide, where Inkaterra Asociación has encouraged the declaration of Peru’s first marine reserve. The Tropical Pacific Sea of Peru was recently declared a ‘Hopespot’ by the Mission Blue Alliance led by oceanographer Sylvia Earl.

Cabo Blanco’s Regatta was preceded by the Encounter of Peruvian Sails on June 26, as the artisanal watercrafts saluted the four-masted, class “A” barque BAP Unión. The world’s second largest vessel, the training ship of the Peruvian Navy sailed across the northern coast on its way to the international contest Velas Latinoamérica 2018, held in Guayaquil.

GENOMICS WORKSHOP AT
INKATERRA GUIDES FIELD STATION

A genomics workshop organized by Field Projects International will be held at Inkaterra Guides Field Station. Genomics in the Jungle: Sample to Sequence in the Amazon Rainforest, Lab and Field Training (July 22-August 4) explores how genetics is revolutionizing biological research, with the successful deployment of instruments that enable molecular work to be conducted ‘on-the-fly’ and in the field.

The new analysis lab at Inkaterra Guides Field Station minimizes the hassles and barriers associated with transporting samples around the world to distant labs that possess the equipment and resources to extract, amplify, and sequence DNA. This new technology is democratizing wildlife research by empowering field scientists all around the world with comparable molecular tools to directly advance their research and conservation initiatives.

BIRD OF THE MONTH:
BLUE-AND-YELLOW MACAW

The Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) belongs to the Psittacidae family, which includes parrots, parakeets and macaws. Birds from this family are known for being colorful and good climbers due to their prehensile feet and curved bills. These are very smart birds and according to recent DNA studies, falcons are closer to Psittacids more than to hawks and eagles.

The Spanish name for the macaw can be traced since the Incan era, derived from two words in Quechua – “Huaca” (Sacred) and “Mayu” (River). Its shiny feathers were very appealing for communities in the Andes and the Amazon, as these were found as ornament in many headdresses. The Blue-and-Yellow Macaw is seen in many of the Inkaterra excursions in Madre de Dios, mostly in Lake Sandoval.
