FILMING IN PERU WITH WERNER HERZOG:
48 SHORT FEATURES PRODUCED IN THE AMAZON

Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog returned to the Peruvian Amazon, where two of his masterpieces were filmed – Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo. In this occasion, Herzog guided 48 young artists from all over the world in a practical workshop organized by Black Factory Cinema in association with Inkaterra. Each student was to conceive, shoot and edit a short feature on their own in 11 only days, using local non-actors and locations such as the Inkaterra surroundings, the native Eje’Eja community in Palma Real, the megadiverse Lake Sandoval or the city of Puerto Maldonado.

The group was able to portray the Madre de Dios region, specially the encounter of Amazonian nature and cultural traditions with the growing modernity, through many different perspectives. A selection of short films will be made by Herzog himself. The selected films will be submitted to competitions in international festivals, including Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand.

BIRD OF THE MONTH:
GIANT HUMMINGBIRD

Hummingbirds are notable for their versatile flight, which allows them to hover in the same place or even fly backwards. Member of the Trochilidae family, the giant hummingbird (Patagona gigas) is the largest of them all. It has an average size of 20cm (8in). Its geographical distribution goes from the inter-Andean valleys across both slopes, to the high Andes.

Due to its size, the giant hummingbird has a heavy flight with a slower wing-beat. Thus, it looks similar to a swift. This species is commonly observed at the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba surroundings, during the excursions around the Sacred Valley.
