NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2018

The third edition of Momento was celebrated in Madre de Dios from November 27-30. Conceived by renowned chef Virgilio Martinez (Central Restaurante) and co-organized by Inkaterra and Mater Iniciativa, the event was an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on traditional gastronomy, local cultures and the sustainable use of natural resources in the Amazon rainforest.

70 guests including chefs, artists and scientists gathered at Inkaterra Guides Field Station – Inkaterra’s third property in Madre de Dios, an enriching experience to travelers committed with biodiversity conservation, which allows everyone to be part of diverse research projects managed by NGO Inkaterra Asociación.

Momento featured various experiences in the Amazon, from an expedition to Lake Sandoval (an oxbow lake inhabited by giant river otters, howler monkeys and native birds) to a tour around Inkaterra Asociación’s Bio-Orchard, an Amazon fish barbecue by Inkaterra chef Rafael Casin, and a hike up the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, across hanging bridges 100ft off the ground.

Talks by neurosurgeon Atom Sarkar, Argentinean chef Narda Lepes, NatGeo Latin America Director Gael Almeida, photographer Nicholas Villaume and ethnobotanist Camilo Díaz, among others, took place at Inkaterra facilities such as the newly-opened Meeting Room –designed for outdoor training, work conferences and other events.

SOMOS MAGAZINE FEATURES
CAMERA-TRAP IMAGES OF WILDLIFE IN MADRE DE DIOS

Somos magazine had access to images of a camera-trap system with 26 devices distributed across the two margins of the Bajo Madre de Dios River – one group is placed within the Tambopata National Reserve’s buffer zone, the other next to the Interoceanic Highway.

The alliance between the Smithsonian Institution and Inkaterra Asociación led to this project, which monitors wildlife and evaluates factors in both environs, such as species abundance, sighting recurrence and distribution in protected or fragmented habitats. “Camera-traps have registered jaguars, giant anteaters or peccaries,” says Adolfo Schmitt from Inkaterra Asociación. “One of the most interesting sightings is the short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis), an elusive and threatened species”.

BIRD OF THE MONTH:
SPECTACLED OWL

Owls are fascinating nocturnal birds – stealthy and experienced predators with a keen sight and hearing, which allows them to hunt their prey in dark environs.

The Spectacled owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) is a magnificent species from the Strigidae family. Distributed across the rainforest, it is the largest owl found in the Amazon rainforest. Itis identified through its yellow beak, its brown head and throat, its fawn belly, and the light-colored marks around its big eyes. It can be found at daylight perched on a branch, while its distinctive call is heard at nighttime in the Inkaterra environs of Madre de Dios.
