NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2018

Endowing a feature film, a documentary, a filmmaker, an actor or anyone working in the art of cinema who contributes with a special achievement in innovation, courage and vision, the Werner Herzog Film Award 2018 went to Colombian filmmakers Liliana Diaz Castillo and Estephania Bonnet Alonso.

The two creators of Black Factory Cinema envisioned a successful format for film workshops. Young filmmakers from all over the world gather for a masterclass in environments such as Cuba or the Peruvian rainforest. “They are required to arrive without preconceived ideas or prepared scripts for a film. They have to conceive, shoot, and edit a film within nine days. On the tenth day the films will be viewed by all participants. The pressure upon them is relentless, similar to what they are to encounter in the real world of cinema”, said German maverick Werner Herzog.

Under the topic ‘Fever Dreams in the Jungle’, the last workshop was celebrated last May at Inkaterra Guides Field Station (Madre de Dios). 15 selected short films from the workshop in Peru were screened at the Filmmuseum München during the awards ceremony, followed by a discussion with Werner Herzog and the awardees.

BIRD OF THE MONTH: SUNBITTERN

The Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias) is a most wanted species by birders. A medium size bird with a pale throat and long buff neck, it has a barred pattern from back to tail and white spots in the wings, ending in long and yellow legs. When flying or as it spans its wings, the sunbittern shows a beautiful and colorful pattern.

Its call is a melancholic whistle, heard around a habitat that comprehends wetlands and rivers in the Amazon. Lakes Sandoval and Valencia, as well as the environs of Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion, bring good chances to spot it.

After Round Africa 2016 and Round the World 2017, Peter Wilson will tackle South America – a venture relying on Inkaterra as strategic partner in Peru. The explorer will first visit with Puerto Maldonado, gateway to one of the most diverse environments in the planet, and depart Peru after visiting Cabo Blanco, game-fishing mecca visited by Ernest Hemingway.
