Organized by the Global Crop Diversity Trust (Germany), the International Potato Center (Peru) and Inkaterra, the Food Forever Experience gathered experts to address the opportunities to mitigate the effects of climate change and strategies to enhance food security worldwide. Inkaterra founder José Koechlin was among panelists to share his holistic approach towards the research and conservation of natural resources financed through ecotourism.
The President of Peru, Martin Vizcarra officially opened the international forum at Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, joined by Vice President Mercedes Araoz and the Governor of Cusco, Jean Paul Benavente. “We are working very hard to take advantage of our natural resources in a sustainable way, in order to help the environment,” the President said, as he assured his Government’s support to Andean agriculture. “Peru has a vast richness of climates, life zones and native cultures we need to protect.”
President Vizcarra along with all attendants signed the event’s Declaration of Interdepence, an international pledge on food diversity. “Our planet’s future demands ambitious and concrete steps to safeguard and equitably share our food diversity. As we all are dependent of this agricultural biodiversity, we need to act with boldness and urgency to protect our food’s livelihood, forever,” the agreement underscores.

RARE ALBINO COATI SIGHTED AT
INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO HOTEL
During a routine inspection around the orchid trails at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, Inkaterra Asociación’s Ecology Department and the gardening team encountered a rare albino coati (Nasua nasua albina) walking pass by them. It is undoubtedly a very peculiar sighting, as it is the first time this mammal is spotted in hotel grounds. As far as we know, it is also a new register for Machu Picchu.
Native to the Central and South American forests, the coati is a mammal identified by its long snout, bear claws and long tail with rings. With arboreal habits, it has great motor skills, moving through the branches using its tail as if it were a monkey. Hence, coatis are also nicknamed Sachamono in Quechua, meaning “Almost a monkey”.

692 SCHOOLCHILDREN TRAINED ON
BIRD DIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION
As part of a strategic alliance between PetroPerú and Inkaterra Asociación, chief ornithologist Dennis Osorio (ITA) and Willy Ortiz conducted environmental education workshops for 692 schoolchildren in Talara. Through creativity, students were able to learn about the Peruvian Tropical Sea, Desert and Dry Forest, as well as the unique biodiversity inhabiting these ecosystems – from the Sechuran fox (Lycalopex sechurae) to the endangered Tumbes tyrant (Tumbezia salvini).
These workshops were essential to commit younger generations in environmental conservation, raising awareness on the need to restore and protect native flora such as the carob tree (Prosopis pallida), home to endemic species in Northern Peru.
