NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2019

The most recent addition to the Inkaterra spa collection is NUA – ‘Sky’ in the native Ese’Eja language. Established over stilts at the hotel’s entrance, NUA spa elevates on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. A perfect spot to stare at the Amazonian dawn or sunset while enjoying special treatments.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción’s NUA is inspired by a holistic concept, which combines the classic nurturing of wellness with exotic ingredients of the Amazon rainforest, providing a sensory and mystical experience.

Available in our gift shop, all NUA Spa products are 100% natural and derived from in-house botanical extracts. For instance, the cacao exfoliation therapy uses fruits from the property’s organic cacao plantation. Cacao has a high concentration of antioxidants with a rejuvenating effect, as cleanses free radicals. The cacao treatment also offers lymphatic drainage and a relaxing massage with white chocolate milk to moisturize your skin.

TAMBOPATA LIBRE: HELP US SAVE THE AMAZON
BY HAVING A TOAST WITH OUR SPECIAL COCKTAIL

With an extension of 570.000 acres, the Tambopata National Reserve is one of the most diverse nature hotspots in our planet and home to over 1500 native families. Nowadays, Tambopata and its buffer zone are in peril due to illegal mining. In the past thirty years, mining in Madre de Dios region has grown 916%, while 234,750 acres were deforested. Throughout October, Inkaterra will raise funds in support of a group of local environmentalists committed to monitoring and fighting against illegal mining in Tambopata and endorsed by the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA).

Help us save the Peruvian Amazon buying a t-shirt in the gift shop or try our special Tambopata Libre cocktail, a refreshing blend made with pisco macerated with the woody fruit of the bolaina tree (Guazuma ulmifolia), sweetened with ubo or hog plum (Spondias mombin) and rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush) for a mild taste of citric.

BIO-CHAR OBTAINED FROM ORGANIC WASTE
WILL HELP REFORESTATION IN MACHU PICCHU

Inkaterra Asociación, in alliance with AJE Group and the Machu Picchu Town Hall, works on Sustainable Machu Picchu. This initiative turned the Historic Sanctuary into the first destination in Peru and Latin America that responsibly manages almost all its solid waste. Nowadays, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World is a successful case study for ecotourism worldwide.

After donating a PET compacting machine and a biodiesel production plant to avoid oil spillage at the Vilcanota River, the alliance donated a pyrolysis plant to turn organic waste into bio-char. This nutrient-rich fertilizer will be destined to the new campaign “One Million Trees for Machu Picchu and surroundings,” presented by SERNANP at the 1st Forum of Solid Waste Management in Regional Governments and Natural Protected Areas, held last September 30 in Machu Picchu Pueblo. The project aims to recover natural environments affected by forest fires, deforestation and other hazards, through a solution derived from innovative and low-cost solid waste management.

VOGUE FEATURES GRIZZLY BEAR’S FRONT MAN
ED DROSTE STAY AT INKATERRA HOTELS

In a recent article for Vogue Magazine, Ed Droste, the lead vocalist of indie-rock band Grizzly Bear, shared impressions of his two weeks travelling across Peru. “Machu Picchu has always been on my travel bucket list,” writes Droste. “Not only does Peru hold the mountainous mystery of the Inkas nestled in the Andes, it also encompasses huge swaths of precious Amazonian rainforests, vast grasslands, open deserts, and the Pacific Ocean running up its west coast.”

Inkaterra welcomed Ed Droste in most of Inkaterra properties, from the Amazon lodges to Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, “a modern and idyllic new property with a vast and beautiful view of the Sacred Valley, each room was a freestanding house with a private fireplace and a deck facing toward the valley.”

SAVING THE GREEN TURTLE IN CABO BLANCO

Member of the Cheloniidae family, the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an endangered species according to the IUCN Red List, due to poaching, environmental pollution or trawling.

Inkaterra Asociación and the Waitt Foundation join efforts for a new initiative to conserve this iconic species native to the Tropical Pacific.

Marine biologist Dr. María Gracia De La Barra (UCSUR) performs daily monitoring in Cabo Blanco and nearby coastal towns, surveying stranded turtles to determine causes behind the damages suffered by these specimens. Mainly due to anthropogenic activity, turtles present cranial and shell fractures, as well as lung damages and plastic waste or fishing apparel in their digestive tract.

Awareness campaigns among fishing associations, local authorities and tourism enterprises are key to the green turtle’s conservation, as well as an adequate management of stranded specimens.
