Known for his photo spreads featured in GQ, Rolling Stone and Esquire, Danish filmmaker Morten Andersen shot a new video for Inkaterra La Casona, Cusco’s first-ever boutique hotel and the first Relais & Châteaux property in Peru.
Named the fourth best hotel in the world and the best hotel in Central and South America in Travel+Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Awards (American Express Group), Inkaterra La Casona was harmoniously restored by Inkaterra throughout five years. This 16th Century manor house, which stands on the training grounds for an elite army of Incas, had Spanish Conquistador Diego de Almagro and ‘Libertador’ Simón Bolívar among its illustrious guests.

PRESIDENT OF PERU ANNOUNCES NEW ‘SUSTAINABLE MACHU PICCHU’ INITIATIVE
Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra officially started the ‘One Million Trees in Machu Picchu’ campaign, contributing to the reforestation of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary and its surroundings as a means to restore and protect the Inca citadel from forest fires and landslides.
The President was escorted by the Minister of Environment, Fabiola Muñoz, and Inkaterra Founder José Koechlin, in representation of the Inkaterra-AJE Group alliance ‘Sustainable Machu Picchu’ – an innovative and low-cost solid waste management strategy that saved Machu Picchu from being included in UNESCO’s Patrimonies at Risk list.
After donating a PET compacting machine and a biodiesel production plant to avoid oil spillage at the Vilcanota River, the Inkaterra-AJE alliance donated a pyrolysis plant to turn organic waste into bio-char. This nutrient-rich fertilizer will be destined to “One Million Trees in Machu Picchu”.
“Machu Picchu is now regarded as a successful case study for ecotourism worldwide, since it is the first city in Latin America that responsibly manages almost all its solid waste,” said José Koechlin.

INKATERRA SPONSORS
SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION IN NORTHERN PERU
Inkaterra Asociación organized a seminar on sea turtles at the UNMSM Natural History Museum, where fellow researcher María Gracia de la Barra addressed conservation strategies for five sea turtle species in Northern Peru.
Inkaterra Asociación and the Waitt Foundation joined efforts to conserve sea turtles in the Peruvian coast, as species iconic to the Tropical Pacific are critically endangered, mainly due to human activity. The project focused on Cabo Blanco-El Ñuro, known for its high biological diversity and for being a sea turtle hotspot.
In 2019, De La Barra performed daily monitoring of stranded turtles in Cabo Blanco and nearby beaches, as to determine the causes behind the damages suffered by these specimens. Awareness campaigns helped educating local communities for these species’ conservation.
