INKATERRA BIOLOGIST CARMEN SOTO

On the recent issue of Orchids Magazine, the bulletin of the American Orchid Society, former chair of the AOS Conservation Committee Tom Mirenda pays homage to our resident biologist Carmen Soto, who sadly passed away on early 2021. “Of all the amazing cast of characters in the orchid world, there may be none as memorable and beloved as Carmen Soto,” Tom admits when discussing how essential she was for the conservation of the 372 native orchid species found at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

In his article “A True Jewel of the Andes,” Mirenda reflects on how her legacy continues to inspire conservation in the Andean cloud forest of Machu Picchu. “She freely shared this knowledge and inspired commitment with her young staff of biologists and gardeners as well as tens of thousands of visitors and scientists from around the world that have worked with her to describe myriad newly discovered species in the region around Machu Picchu.”

FOR MARINE CONSERVATION
IN THE PERUVIAN NORTH

Discover all about Inkaterra Asociación’s recent marine conservation initiative, promoting the sustainable harvest of the rainbow-lipped pearl oyster (Pteria sterna), a native bivalve mollusk for pearl production and nacre-derived products.

In alliance with the National Fishing and Aquaculture Innovation Program (PNIPA), AGROMAR, and the Cabo Blanco Artisanal Fishing Association, the new project encourages the conservation of marine resources in the Tropical Pacific of Northern Peru, organizes training workshops for the Cabo Blanco artisanal fishing community, teaching sustainable methods of pearl harvesting for marine conservation.

Relying on a 100Ha marine area for sustainable aquaculture, the pearl harvesting program is ready to commercialize pearls and nacre-derived products, with a fantastic potential towards responsible jewelry as well as to become a must-see for experiential travel in the Peruvian North.
