Approved by the United Nations, the GreenInitiative certification company partnered with Inkaterra to endorse the Peruvian ecotourism company as the first Climate Positive hotel brand in the world. By measuring Inkaterra’s Co2 footprint and offset, GreenInitiative determines hotel operations as carbon negative or climate positive – meaning, “any activity that furthers the achievement of net zero carbon emissions, providing an environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.”
“This outstanding accomplishment is a validation of Inkaterra’s 46-year efforts placing scientific research, biodiversity conservation and sustainability at the very core of our business,” stated ecotourism pioneer José Koechlin. “GreenInitiative’s certification also reminds us all that the natural environment and native cultures are our industry’s most precious resources, and their conservancy is the only way to ensure the future of travel.”
Among Inkaterra’s contributions to climate action, stand out the declaration Inkaterra founded Peru’s first land concession for research and ecotourism purposes in the Madre de Dios region of the Amazon rainforest. There, the brand established three eco-lodges inspired by local architecture and built with native materials in harmony with the surroundings. Additionally, Inkaterra leads a strategic alliance with AJE Group, the Machu Picchu Town Hall and Cusco’s Regional Government. Together, the alliance is working together to turn Machu Picchu into the first Carbon Neutral Wonder of the World, through the nurturing of one million trees across the Machu Picchu national reserve, and an innovative waste management strategy which advances a circular economy in Peru’s iconic destination.
“We are currently working to certify Inkaterra as the world’s first Climate Positive hotel brand,” stated Luciana Visnevski, director of GreenInitiative in Peru. “This assessment will be official in October 2021, when Inkaterra is validated by United Nations’ Carbon Neutral Now program.”
