WERNER HERZOG AND JOSÉ KOECHLIN CELEBRATE
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF
‘AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD’

This February, Legendary filmmaker, Werner Herzog, will attend a special screening for the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking Aguirre, The Wrath of God. This extraordinary event will be held next Friday, February 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the University Theatre on FAU’s campus in Boca Raton, Florida.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Werner Herzog and the film’s co-producer,ecotourism pioneer José Koechlin – a celebration of their longtime friendship.

Described by film critic Roger Ebert as “one of the great haunting visions of cinema,”Aguirre, The Wrath of God follows the descent into madness of the callous Spanish conquistador Don Lope de Aguirre, in search of El Dorado, the mythical empire of gold. Portraying the true essence of Peru’s breathtaking landscapes, from the heights of Machu Picchu to the depths of the Amazon, Herzog’s film contributed to the development of ecotourism in Peru.

Werner Herzog has produced, written and directed nearly 70 feature films and documentaries, and recently published his first novel, The Twilight World –inspired by the true story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who defended a small island in the Philippines for twenty-nine years after the end of World War II.

“Werner is one of the greatest artists of our time,” José Koechlin says. “Many years ago, François Truffaut named him the most important film director alive – and I believe he still is. The experience of producing Aguirre led me in 1975 to the foundation of Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in the Madre de Dios rainforest, within Peru’s first private concession for research and ecotourism. Since then we have pursued our dreams through Inkaterra, producing scientific research as a basis for biodiversity conservation and the wellbeing local communities.”

The event is sponsored by FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies and the Boca Raton Museum of Art, where the international exhibition ‘Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru’ runs through March 3. Produced by World Heritage Exhibitions in alliance with Inkaterra Asociación, this all-new immersive museum experience boasts a stunning selection of 192 artifacts from the Larco Museum (one of the most impressive collections of gold treasures to ever tour the world) and the first-ever VR tour of Machu Picchu.

INKATERRA AND COPESCO VISIT CABO BLANCO
FOR THE DEVELOPMENT
OF
NEW TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE

Inkaterra chairman José Koechlin and engineer Alberto Petrlik, Executive Director of the COPESCO Regional Plan (Ministry of Foreign Commerce and Tourism), visited Cabo Blanco to discuss new infrastructure projects for the development of tourism in this paradisiac beach destination facing the Tropical Pacific in Northern Peru.

Aiming to improve the local economy through ecotourism and sustainable development, COPESCO will address public investment to enhance access roads, as well as redesign the town’s boardwalk and open a new education center to encourage the conservation of marine resources and to preserve the millenary tradition of artisanal fishing by raft and sailboat, declared Cultural Patrimony of Peru – an effort led by NGO Inkaterra Asociación in 2018.

The alliance between Inkaterra and COPESCO will also contribute to advance in infrastructure for water sports such as surfing, kitesurf and sport fishing, and other activities including regional gastronomy to further the tourism offerings in Cabo Blanco. Additionally, local communities will be trained in experiential travel and services. Such is the case of Inkaterra Asociación’s recent initiative: a 100Ha concession for the conservation of marine resources (only artisanal fishing is allowed) and the sustainable harvest of the rainbow-lipped pearl oyster (Pteria sterna), a native bivalve mollusk for pearl and nacre-derived products, with fantastic potential for sustainably-made jewelry.

NEW WORKSHOP ON EDIBLE AMAZONIAN FUNGI
ORGANIZED BY INKATERRA ASOCIACIÓN

Within the framework for the project “Isolation, Barcoding and Production Technology of Wild Amazonian Fungi for Local Gastronomy in Tambopata, Madre de Dios”, NGO Inkaterra Asociación co-organized its 2nd Workshop on Nurturing Amazonian Fungi, held on January 15 at the National University of Madre de Dios’ Fundo El Bosque plant nursery.

The workshop was led by lead researcher Dr. Mishari García, with the involvement of 42 attendees including students, scientists and local entrepreneurs. Participants learned about the initiative’s methodology and results and how to grow edible Amazonian mushrooms. The group was also trained in the macroscopic recognition of fungi species and the procedures to grow and harvest this innovative gastronomic products.

The workshop had four stages: inoculation, sterilization, substrate preparation and strain repeating. The results will contribute to the development of gastronomic and medicinal fungi for agricultural industry and food security in the Peruvian Amazon. This initiative is developed by Inkaterra Asociación with the financial support of National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CONCYTEC), in alliance with the World Bank.
