PLAY LAB FILMS AND INKATERRA PRESENT
NEW FILMMAKING LAB IN THE AMAZON
WITH PALME D’OR WINNER APICHATPONG WEERASATHAKUL

50 young filmmakers from 27 countries will attend the new practical film workshop under the guidance of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, one of the most original voices in contemporary cinema.

From the 18th to 28th of June, for ten days, each participant will create a short film following the wonderful methodology created by the master Abbas Kiarostami, adapted by maverick Werner Herzog and now revisited by Apichatpong Weerasathakul. This methodology will be implemented in an environment carefully thought out and designed by the PlayLab Films crew, for the creation of synergies and collective and individual learning that will transform the careers of all participants.

The new filmmaking workshop will take place from June 18-28, 2022 in the Tambopata National Reserve, at the facilities of Inkaterra Guides Field Station, an ecological center and research laboratory of flora and fauna for scientists and students who wish to explore and learn about the Peruvian Amazon.

The workshop offers participants a unique opportunity to approach the largest tropical forest on the planet and one of the most biodiverse and multicultural regions of the world, through the lens and experience of master filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Winner of the 2010 Cannes Palme d’Or for his cult classic Uncle Bonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Apichatpong Weerasethakul is at the forefront of contemporary Thai cinema. His body of work reflects on dreams and nature, as proven by his latest masterpiece Memoria (winner of the Prix du Jury at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival), starring Academy-award winner Tilda Swinton.

“I always think of a film as a body,” Apichatpong Weerasethakul reflects. “What you as a filmmaker want to do with all the parts – with that collection of images and sounds that a film is made up of, which are its organs – is to give life to that body, to make it a living organism.”

INKATERRA CELEBRATES THE 2022 GLOBAL BIG DAY

Championing birdwatching and conservation, the Global Big Day is a major event where birders from all over the world team up over the course of 24 hours to spot the greatest number of species in a specific country. Peru achieved first place in the 2015, 2016 and 2021 editions – last year, up to 1361 bird species were registered.

Once again, the Inkaterra team represented Peru for the 2022 edition, held on May 14. A total of 221 bird species where found in a single day on Inkaterra grounds in Madre de Dios (189 species) and Cusco (36 species).

This year, Peru ranked second place after registering 1430 species.

Some noteworthy species from the 2022 Global Big Day at Inkaterra were: Laughing flacon (Herpetotheres cachinnans), Horned screamer (Anhima cornuta), Southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis), and Crested owl (Lophostrix cristata). The only Black bushbird (Neoctantes niger) found this year in Peru was seen at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica.

Inkaterra grounds are home to 903 registered bird species, almost as much as Costa Rica’s total bird diversity. Committed to biodiversity conservation, Inkaterra Asociación manages one of Peru’s five bird banding stations, established in the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios.

PRESS AND AWARDS:
INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO HOTEL
NAMED ONE OF TRAVEL + LEISURE’S
500 BEST HOTELS OF 2022

We are proud to announce that Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel was recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s 500 best hotels in its popular T+L 500 list. Constructed at the foot of one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is an intimate Andean village with terraced hills, waterfalls, stone pathways and whitewashed adobe casitas tucked away in the Andean cloud forest. The property sits on 12 acres of exquisite natural beauty and is home to 214 registered bird species – such as the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock, the golden-headed quetzal and 18 species of hummingbirds. It is also home to the world’s largest native orchid collection (372 species).

Kristy Alpert from Cosmopolitan magazine also stayed at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel during a dream trip across the Sacred Valley of the Incas. “Sleep in and enjoy a late breakfast buffet at the hotel because most trains don’t depart for Cusco until the afternoon, which gives you plenty of time for pampering. The steamy, candlelit eucalyptus Andean sauna at Inkaterra’s Unu Spa is a great way to spend 15 minutes, but real relaxation comes with the spa’s signature massages or exfoliations with coca leaves,” she advises.

Meanwhile in Paris, the bestselling exhibition Machu Picchu et les trésors du Pérou at La Cité d’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Palais de Chaillot) keeps the French press raving. “A never-before-seen voyage in time,” says News Day France. Additionally, Arts in the City ranks it as one of the best exhibitions taking place in Paris this May.

The largest exhibition to showcase Peru’s cultural legacy and extraordinary biodiversity, Machu Picchu et les trésors du Pérou boasts a stunning selection of 192 artifacts from the Larco Museum – one of the most impressive collections of gold treasures to ever tour the world – and the first-ever VR tour of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. At the exhibition’s gift shop, visitors will also find special rates and promotions for a dream trip across Peru with accommodations at the Inkaterra lodges.
