SEE THE DARWIN200 PROJECT’S DOCUMENTARY
HIGHLIGHTING INKATERRA ASOCIACIÓN’S
BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION INITIATIVES

The DARWIN200 Project retraces Charles Darwin’s 19th-century voyage, stopping at 32 ports around the globe through 2025. Reminiscent of the historic HMS Beagle, the three-mast ship Oosterschelde carries a crew of DARWIN200 leaders: young researchers devoted to environmental conservation, who aim to reach an interactive audience and raise awareness of wildlife care initiatives at each destination the vessel visits.

Last year, Inkaterra Asociación partnered with The DARWIN200 Project to host three of its scientists while making landfall in Peru. Each researcher teamed up with a young filmmaker to register their findings as they ventured into the Amazon rainforest of Madre de Dios and the cloud forest of Machu Picchu. They journeyed in search of a particular species of flora or fauna in order to explore the role it plays in its habitat, the threats it faces, and the strategies for its long-term conservation.

The three documentary features produced at Inkaterra grounds are now available at Darwin200’s official YouTube channel. The first film goes in pursuit of the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana), considered Peru’s national bird and one of the 311 bird species registered in the cloud forest of the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. Other reportage ventures into the Amazon rainforest, diving into the swamps of Madre de Dios, where an endangered vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia) is cultivated by Inkaterra Asociación to help conserve the wetland ecosystem. The third film showcases an expedition to the clay licks and the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway in search of the blue-headed macaw (Primolius couloni) native to Eastern Peru.

ITALIAN MAGAZINE ‘PANORAMA’ STAYS AT
INKATERRA MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO HOTEL
TO EXPLORE THE LAND OF ENCHANTED MOUNTAINS

Travel writer Marco Morello from Italian magazine Panorama, visited the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel, nestled at the foot of one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

“For the ascent to Machu Picchu, or to relax after the day's effort, an excellent idea is to stay at the Inkaterra hotel, which revives the old-world atmosphere of an Andean village… surrounded by hill terraces, waterfalls and 83 villas and cabins tastefully decorated with locally crafted furniture and accessories,” Morello writes in his chronicle Cosa vedere in Peru, il paese delle montane incantate (‘Things to see in Peru, the land of enchanted mountains’).

Recently recognized as one of Travel+Leisure magazine’s 500 Favorite Hotels and Resorts in the World, the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a pioneering case of regenerative tourism. Its grounds were originally used for grazing and growing tea. In 1976, Inkaterra began the restoration of the cycle of life in the Machu Picchu cloud forest, through the reforestation of native flora such as ferns, bromeliads, palms, and native trees as the queñual and the pisonay.

Restoring the Andean cloud forest has enabled the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel to enhance one of the most biodiversity-rich environments within city limits. 311 bird species are registered within the hotel grounds by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird app, including the golden-headed quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps), the versicolored barbet (Eubucco versicolor), the Andean motmot (Momotus aequatorialis), the torrent duck (Merganetta armata), and up to 18 hummingbird species, are some of the most representative species at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Its lush gardens host 111 butterfly species, as well as the world’s largest native orchid collection according to the American Orchid Society, with 372 recorded species. Additionally, the organic tea produced in the hotel grounds won the gold medal at the 2023 Annual Teas of the World Awards in Paris, as well as two silver medals in the 2024 edition.
